Diagnosing
the Problem - The Value of Knowing
Many people turn to the Drake Institute when they have obtained a diagnosis
of one of these conditions. Others have read the symptom checklists
and believe they or someone close to them suffers from one of these
disorders. In either group there may be questions about the diagnosis.
For some, we offer confirmation of the original findings. For others,
it’s the relief of knowing what the problem is and then there
may be some with an inaccurate diagnosis to correct. At the Drake Institute
we know how important it is for you to have the fullest confidence in
the diagnosis.
The Drake
Institute provides each patient with an evaluation / assessment applying
world-class standards, our experience based on thousands of individual
clinical evaluations, well-established scientific evidence, and the
specialized knowledge of leading professionals and institutions in the
medical scientific community. The intake staff is backed by a team of
neuropsychologists and our medical director who review each assessment.
A thorough and conclusive assessment is needed to establish the direction
for a care program ideally suited, in fact reflective of the patient’s
needs. We know that the best opportunity for a successful treatment
requires an assessment that pinpoints needs and guides care.
Inattention could be the only problem
or could be a symptom that is masking other issues, such as other learning
disorders. We begin with either attentional (ADHD) care or stress treatments,
depending on the patient's needs.
If you provide us with prior diagnostic
workups, we consider them carefully and include the findings, but we
do not accept the diagnosis until we confirm it for ourselves. Our diagnostics
are the road maps for patient care.
The Basic Eval/Screen done during
the Initial Appointment, provides us with a great deal of necessary
information. This could very well be all the data needed for your program
or further psyhcoeducational, neruopsychological, or auditory/language
testing may be warranted.
Brain Mapping

When treatment results are not as
expected, it may indicate an idiosyncratic brainwave pattern. This suspicion
would lead us to have a Brain Mapping performed in order to specifically
delineate which areas of the brain are either not at full function or
overactive. This procedure is only used when necessary to the patient's
care and is not at all painful.
In addition, in about 60% of our
patients, a Learning Disorder is suggested as part of or possibly the
main problem. When this is true, we need a separate testing/ evaluation
to pin point the problem if it is present, and to determine its exact
nature. Fortunately/there are treatments for Auditory Processing Disorders
and Receptive/Expressive Auditory / Language Disorders, if they are
found to be present. Our clinical experience indicates that in 33% of
ADD/ADHD cases, one or both of these disorders are present.
Family Supportive Counseling, Social
Skills Training, etc., are among some of the Full Care issues that may
have to be addressed to ensure the best results.
The effort we put into Full Care
has been proven to provide the best results for you and your child.
The Institute's comprehensive approach can provide and coordinate all
of the necessary care.
