How The Treatment
Works
Since 1992
we have seen over 9000 ADD/ADHD patients. Over the years Drake has exhibited
an increasingly higher success rate. Our understanding of the dynamics
of care has also grown, along with our patient’s improvements.
The human brain is one of the most
adaptable organisms in all of nature. At Drake we cherish and support
that axiom. We use it to give our patients the tools and skills they
may have never developed. Once the brain has achieved its new abilities,
with usage, they can become long-lasting resources available throughout
the patient’s lifetime. Fundamentally, we apply simple learning
principles to produce a greater ability on the part of the patient to
handle the demands of their world. This disorder is neurological, and
specifically based in the brain’s incapacity to respond to tasks
it is given. Those with this disorder show under-activity and/or over-activity
in areas of the brain responsible for attention. This condition puts
many of our life’s goals beyond our reach.
These disorders have patterns of
brain activity that can be monitored by simple neurofeedback instruments
(EEG). By placing electrodes on the surface areas that require change,
the patient can get feedback on what is going on. This enables the learning
capacity of the brain, its special ability to adapt to challenge and
perform in new ways, a chance to heal itself. This capacity is present
in almost all patients (98%). As the brain uses the new pathways it
develops to handle the challenges in their lives, it begins to physically
strengthen. The underlying secret for long-lasting growth is usage,
around which the brain develops.
In a case where a patient, or learner
is not motivated to do well, this theory predicts failure. We at Drake
monitor the sources of motivation in our child patients. We do this
by communicating with the parents, siblings, teachers, and other school
authorities who can impact the child’s motivation. While the child
is developing new skills can cause changes, however subtle not recognized
by these significant others, the child’s motivation to lessen.
When this occurs, treatment suffers and could fail. When this condition
is satisfied, it is highly likely the child will succeed.
In some cases, the standard protocols
for treating these disorders do not produce optimum results. People
are different and some may have unique patterns that must be uncovered.
In these cases, additional testing will be required to improve the specificity
of treatment. There may also be a Learning Disorder that has produced
an attentional difficulty that presents as ADD/ADHD. For those patients,
Attentional Training/Treatment is required, but to a lesser degree.
Following the success of this training, those patients can now complete
the treatment for the learning disorder.
