Orientation Seminar
The pre-intake orientation is necessary prior to being evaluated and beginning care, and includes the following topics:

1. Introduction - purpose of the seminar for parents and adult patients - a shared commitment between the Drake Institute's staff and our patients to maximize clinical success.

2. Full patient care - providing full care to address all of our patients' needs.

3. Diagnosing ADD/ADHD in children, adolescents and adults. When are symptoms of distractibility, difficulty concentrating, etc. characteristics of normal behavior and when is it ADD?

4. Diagnosing learning disorders such as an auditory processing disorder and receptive- expressive language deficits.

5. Is it ADD or an auditory processing disorder?

6. Impact of ADD and or auditory processing disorders on the patient's behavior, self-esteem, motivation and academic outcome.

7. Impact of the child's or adolescent's ADD on the family?

8. Brain functioning in ADD patients. Why someone with ADD can be quite intelligent but underachieve.

9. Healthy brain wave patterns for concentration and sitting still.

10. Why drugs cannot resolve ADD/ADHD and the side effects of these drugs.

11. Drake Institute's comprehensive non-drug treatment program:

a) Full care

b) Results based and closed ended

c) Resolving the disorder as opposed to adapting to it

d) Improving brain functioning so that the patient's new brain resources are the vehicle for their achievements as opposed to being a barrier

e) Relieving families of the need and responsibility of supporting the patient's life long handicap

f) What is neurofeedback?

g) How neurofeedback can enable the patient to normalize brain functioning

h) Parental involvement

i) Involvement of the teachers

j) Behavioral modification

m) Special considerations for adult patients who may require stress treatment and additional care as part of their ADD treatment

14. Number and frequency of treatment sessions and costs.

15. First appointment 2 1/2 - 3 hours - the initial intake appointment/ beginning of treatment program.
